Car scrapping incentive announced

Motorists buying new cars will get a £2,000 discount if they trade in for cars over 10 years old to be scrapped, the chancellor has announced.
Alistair Darling unveiled the scheme - which will run until March 2010 - to help the struggling car industry.

What On Earth Is Scrappage?
It is proving to be an enormous success in Germany and the UK is one of many countries looking on with great interest.
It involves the scrapping of cars that are more than 10 years old in exchange for a voucher worth approximately £2000, which can be used towards the purchase of a new or 1 year old car.

More than three quarters of United Kingdom consumers want a scrappage incentive to boost new-car sales, according to a survey by the country's automotive association.
Some 76 percent of British consumers want a scrappage scheme similar to those in other European countries, says the Society of Motor Manufacturers and Traders (SMMT).
